This glossary is written for virtual airline and flight simulation use within Virtual Air Canada Airline. It is not intended as a real-world aviation reference.
The Quick Reference Handbook is a condensed, immediately accessible reference for abnormal and emergency procedures used on the flight deck. It is derived from the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) and contains checklists for non-normal situations - from system failures and warnings to full emergency procedures such as engine fire, rapid decompression, or hydraulic loss. The QRH is designed for speed of use under high workload: checklists are formatted with clear action-response steps, warnings and cautions are highlighted, and memory items (actions performed before opening the QRH) are identified separately. The QRH discipline follows a defined division of tasks between the PF and PM. When a non-normal condition is identified, memory actions are completed first by the crew from recall, then the PM retrieves the QRH and reads the checklist aloud while the PF confirms and completes actions. This read-and-do methodology ensures no step is missed and that the flying pilot retains control while the PM manages the procedure. The QRH is distinct from the normal checklist booklet used for standard procedures - the QRH is reserved for situations outside the normal operating envelope.

In Virtual Airline Operations

At Virtual Air Canada Airline, pilots flying realistic simulator scenarios are encouraged to use the QRH provided by aircraft developers (such as the PMDG or Fenix documentation) when abnormal conditions are encountered. Proper QRH usage - completing memory items first, then following the checklist sequence - is part of authentic flight deck operations and contributes to overall simulation realism.
