This glossary is written for virtual airline and flight simulation use within Virtual Air Canada Airline. It is not intended as a real-world aviation reference.
Pilot Flying refers to the pilot who has primary control of the aircraft during a given phase of flight. On a two-pilot flight deck, one crew member is designated PF and is responsible for aircraft control inputs - managing the flight controls, autopilot modes, and thrust levers - while the other crew member acts as Pilot Monitoring (PM). The PF designation typically rotates between the Captain and First Officer on a flight-by-flight or leg-by-leg basis according to airline policy. The PF role requires focused attention on aircraft trajectory, energy state, and compliance with ATC clearances. During manual flying phases such as take-off and landing, the PF operates the controls directly. During automated flight, the PF manages the autoflight system - selecting modes, entering targets, and cross-checking FMS routing. The PF calls for checklists, requests items from the PM, and makes key decisions during normal and abnormal procedures. Clear crew communication ensures the PM knows when the PF requires assistance or is handing over a task.

In Virtual Airline Operations

At Virtual Air Canada Airline, the PF/PM concept applies even when flying solo in a simulator. Practicing the discipline of dividing attention between aircraft control (PF tasks) and monitoring/communication (PM tasks) builds realistic crew resource management habits and helps prevent task saturation during complex phases of flight.
