Halifax Stanfield is the main international gateway for Atlantic Canada and Air Canada’s largest operation east of Montréal. The field has two perpendicular runways and supports wide-body operations on the extended runway 05/23. Coastal and maritime fog is a defining operational factor here, with frequent periods of low ceiling and reduced visibility throughout the year. U.S. Customs preclearance has been available since late 2006 for U.S.-bound departures.

Common Procedures

  • Runway selection: 05/23 is the primary runway. 14/32 is selected for strong cross-component conditions or when 05/23 is closed.
  • U.S. preclearance: Available for departures to U.S. destinations. Plan boarding earlier than a domestic departure.
  • Fog operations: Maritime fog can roll in within minutes and just as quickly burn off. Read the latest carefully and ensure alternates carry plenty of fuel margin.
  • Trans-Atlantic dispatch: Halifax is the regular dispatch point for many Air Canada Trans-Atlantic flights from Eastern Canada. Wide-body operations to LHR, CDG, and other European hubs use runway 05/23.
  • No parallel operations: Two intersecting runways. Expect sequential traffic flow.

Hot Spots and Local Hazards

  • Sudden fog onset: A clear afternoon can become CAT-I-or-worse within 30 minutes when a sea breeze brings the fog bank ashore. Always brief the missed approach as if you will fly it.
  • Wildlife: Deer and waterfowl are recurring hazards. Tower broadcasts wildlife advisories on Tower frequency.
  • Taxiway K width: Narrower than the standard 75 ft. Confirm aircraft category fits before accepting a taxi via Kilo.
  • Cross-runway incursions: 05/23 and 14/32 intersect near midfield. Hold-short clearances on these runways must be read back in full and verified at the runway hold-short line.
  • Storm-track exposure: Halifax sits squarely on the North Atlantic storm track. Expect strong winds, freezing rain in winter, and the occasional hurricane remnant in late summer and early fall. Plan alternates accordingly.
