Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International is Air Canada’s eastern Canada hub and the airline’s corporate headquarters. Since runway 10/28 was decommissioned in July 2023, all operations now use the two close parallels 06L/24R and 06R/24L. Both ATIS broadcasts are published in English and French and ATC will accept calls in either language, so brush up on your basic Quebec-French phraseology if you fly here often.

Runways

Runway 10/28 was permanently decommissioned in July 2023 and converted to taxiway use. All jet operations now share the two parallel runways.

ATC Frequencies

ATIS is broadcast separately in English on 133.70 and in French on 127.50. The technical content matches between the two but read whichever language you are most comfortable with before keying up.

Common Procedures

  • Runway selection: 06L/06R for east operations, 24L/24R for west. Wind direction usually dictates the runway in use, but noise considerations and converging arrivals from Quebec City to the north often pin the field to a particular configuration for several hours.
  • Bilingual operations: ATC fluently handles calls in English or French. If you initiate in English, expect English responses for the duration of your contact. Mixing languages within one frequency exchange is acceptable but slows down the controller, so pick one and stay with it.
  • Dependent parallels: Because the two runways are spaced closer than the ICAO minimum for independent IFR, simultaneous ILS approaches require additional separation. Expect staggered arrival sequencing.
  • Tracon coordination: The Montréal Terminal Control Unit also handles traffic to and from CYHU (Saint-Hubert) and several smaller satellites. Expect early descent and an efficient base turn-on.

Hot Spots and Local Hazards

  • 10/28 ghost markings: The decommissioned runway is now a taxiway. Verify your routing against the current diagram, because older charts and some sim sceneries still depict 10/28 as an active runway. Read every taxi clearance carefully near taxiways Foxtrot and Hotel.
  • Convergent tracks on 24L/24R departure: After takeoff on either of the west-flow runways, traffic tracks generally west-southwest. Maintain runway heading until cleared on course to prevent conflict with the parallel departure.
  • Winter contamination: CYUL sees significant freezing rain and freezing drizzle events each winter. Type IV holdover times shrink quickly under freezing precipitation. Coordinate the de-ice plan with the company ramp before pushing.
  • Bird activity around the small lake to the east of the field is a recurring real-world hazard. Tower will broadcast advisories on the operations frequency.
  • Restricted airspace over downtown Montréal (CYR-572) and near the Mirabel airport (CYMX) to the north. Read NOTAMs for active times.
