This glossary is written for virtual airline and flight simulation use within Virtual Air Canada Airline. It is not intended as a real-world aviation reference.
The Pilot-in-Command is the pilot designated as having final authority and responsibility for the operation and safety of the aircraft during flight. This designation is a legal classification defined in aviation regulations worldwide - under ICAO Annex 2 and national regulations such as Transport Canada’s CARs, the PIC is responsible for the safe conduct of the flight, compliance with applicable rules and procedures, and the welfare of all persons on board. On two-pilot transport operations the PIC is typically the Captain, though a First Officer can be designated PIC for currency purposes.
The PIC’s authority supersedes that of other crew members in safety-critical decisions. This includes the authority to deviate from a clearance or procedure if the PIC determines it is necessary for safety, subject to immediate reporting requirements. The PIC is also the final authority on fuel decisions, accepts or rejects the OFP, and may declare an emergency on behalf of the aircraft. Crew resource management principles emphasize that while the PIC holds final authority, effective PICs actively solicit input from other crew members and create an environment where concerns can be raised freely.
In Virtual Airline Operations
At Virtual Air Canada Airline, the pilot in command of each flight is the virtual pilot completing the leg. You are responsible for ensuring your flight is conducted safely, that the route and fuel load are appropriate, and that the PIREP is submitted accurately at the end of the flight. Acting with PIC-level responsibility - even in simulation - is the standard expected of all Virtual Air Canada pilots.
