Brain-Centered Body Scanning (BCBS) is a structured fatigue and fitness-for-duty self-assessment technique used in aviation Crew Resource Management (CRM). The method guides a pilot through a brief, systematic mental check of physical and cognitive readiness before or during flight, drawing attention to signs of fatigue, stress, illness, or impaired judgment. Unlike a simple “how do I feel?” question, BCBS prompts deliberate reflection on specific physical sensations (headache, muscle tension, eye strain), cognitive states (difficulty concentrating, slow recall, narrowed attention), and emotional markers (irritability, anxiety, overconfidence) that are known early indicators of performance degradation. The technique has its roots in mindfulness-based approaches applied to high-stakes operational environments, and it appears in aviation safety curricula alongside other threat and error management (TEM) tools. By developing self-awareness around subtle fatigue cues, crews can make better fitness-for-duty decisions, communicate their state to other crew members, and apply appropriate countermeasures - such as requesting additional rest time, transferring pilot-flying duties, or adjusting workload sharing in the cockpit.
