This glossary is written for virtual airline and flight simulation use within Virtual Air Canada Airline. It is not intended as a real-world aviation reference.
An alternate airport (ALTN) is an aerodrome designated in the flight plan as a backup destination in the event the primary destination airport becomes unavailable for landing. Alternates are required when the forecast weather at the destination falls below specific minima, when the destination has only one instrument approach procedure, or when other regulatory conditions apply. Regulations such as ICAO Annex 2 and national CAR standards define the precise criteria for when an alternate must be filed and what weather minima the alternate itself must meet. Two types of alternates are commonly filed: destination alternates (filed when conditions at the destination are marginal) and takeoff alternates (required when the departure airport weather is below landing minima at the time of takeoff, ensuring the aircraft can return if necessary). En-route alternates may also be designated for extended diversion planning on oceanic or remote routes. The alternate airport must be assessed for runway length, available approaches, NOTAMs, and forecast weather within a defined time window around the estimated time of arrival.

In Virtual Airline Operations

At Virtual Air Canada Airline, the SimBrief OFP automatically calculates and assigns an alternate airport based on destination weather and regulatory fuel requirements. The alternate directly determines your alternate fuel load - one of the five standard fuel components shown in your flight plan. When reviewing your OFP before departure, confirm that the listed alternate is suitable and that sufficient fuel is carried to divert to it from the destination missed approach point.
