This glossary is written for virtual airline and flight simulation use within Virtual Air Canada Airline. It is not intended as a real-world aviation reference.
Above Field Elevation is a measurement of height referenced to the elevation of an airport or aerodrome. It is used primarily in approach and landing contexts to express decision heights, minimum descent altitudes, and obstacle clearance heights relative to the airport surface rather than sea level. AFE is particularly relevant when discussing precision approach minimums. For example, a decision height of 200 feet AFE means the pilot must have visual contact with the runway environment at 200 feet above the airport elevation or execute a missed approach.

In Virtual Airline Operations

Understanding AFE is important when briefing instrument approaches in the simulator. Approach charts specify minimums in terms of AFE (or AGL), and pilots should verify their altimeter settings to ensure accurate height readings during the approach phase.
