ACARS is a digital datalink system used for transmitting short messages between aircraft and ground stations. Originally developed in 1978, it handles a wide range of communications including weather reports, clearance delivery, gate assignments, fuel data, and maintenance alerts. ACARS operates over VHF, HF, or satellite links depending on the aircraft’s location. The system automates many routine communications that would otherwise require voice radio, reducing pilot workload and the chance of miscommunication. Airlines use ACARS to monitor fleet status in real time, and dispatchers can send updated route or weather information directly to the cockpit. ACARS messages are logged and stored for operational analysis.

In Virtual Airline Operations

At Virtual Air Canada Airline, Pegasus ACARS is the primary flight tracking software. It connects to your flight simulator, records your flight data (route, fuel burn, landing rate, flight time), and automatically submits your PIREP when the flight is complete. Pegasus ACARS must be running and connected during every flight for it to count toward your record.
