Connection Issues
I can't connect to VATSIM
I can't connect to VATSIM
Common causes and solutions:
- Wrong credentials - Double-check your VATSIM CID and password at my.vatsim.net. Reset your password if needed.
- Firewall blocking - Ensure your pilot client is allowed through your firewall. VATSIM uses UDP connections that some firewalls block by default.
- Server unavailable - Try a different server. Your pilot client may be defaulting to an overloaded or maintenance server.
- Outdated client - Update to the latest version of your pilot client.
- P0 not completed - You must complete the New Member Orientation before you can connect. Check at my.vatsim.net.
I keep getting disconnected mid-flight
I keep getting disconnected mid-flight
Possible causes:
- Unstable internet - Use a wired connection instead of WiFi if possible. VATSIM requires consistent UDP connectivity.
- Inactivity timeout - VATSIM may disconnect you after extended periods of inactivity. Make sure your simulator is not paused for too long.
- Simulator crash - If your simulator crashes, the VATSIM connection drops. Reconnect when your simulator is running again.
- Client conflict - Ensure only one pilot client is running at a time.
My callsign is already in use
My callsign is already in use
This happens when:
- Another pilot is using the same callsign
- Your previous session did not disconnect cleanly (ghost connection)
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the ghost connection to time out
- Add a letter suffix to your callsign (e.g., ACA456A) temporarily
- If persistent, contact VATSIM support
Audio Problems
ATC can't hear me
ATC can't hear me
- Check PTT - Verify your push-to-talk key is correctly assigned and you are pressing it while speaking
- Check input device - Make sure the correct microphone is selected in your pilot client settings
- Check audio level - Speak into the mic and verify the input level indicator moves into the green zone
- Check TX indicator - When you press PTT, the TX indicator should light up in your pilot client
- Check frequency - Ensure you are tuned to the correct ATC frequency on COM1 or COM2
- Windows audio - Verify your microphone works in Windows Sound Settings first
I can't hear ATC
I can't hear ATC
- Check output device - Verify the correct speakers or headset is selected in your pilot client
- Check volume - Ensure VATSIM audio volume is turned up, both in the pilot client and your system
- Check frequency - Confirm you are on the same frequency as the controller
- Check RX indicator - The RX indicator should show activity when ATC transmits
- Simulator volume - Lower your simulator volume if it is drowning out VATSIM audio
- Audio device conflict - Some simulators grab exclusive audio control. Try using different devices for simulator and VATSIM audio.
Audio is choppy, robotic, or has echo
Audio is choppy, robotic, or has echo
- Choppy audio usually indicates network latency. Try a wired internet connection or switch to a closer VATSIM server.
- Robotic audio can be caused by high CPU usage. Close unnecessary applications.
- Echo is usually caused by using speakers instead of headphones. Switch to headphones or enable noise cancellation.
- Feedback loop - If you hear yourself, your speakers are feeding back into your microphone. Use headphones.
Traffic and Visual Issues
Other aircraft are invisible
Other aircraft are invisible
This is almost always a model matching issue:
- No models installed - You need model matching packages configured. See the Model Matching guide.
- Wrong model path - Verify the model directory path in your pilot client settings is correct.
- Models not loaded - Restart your pilot client after adding models for them to be indexed.
- Render distance - Check your pilot client’s visibility range settings. Increase if aircraft only appear at close range.
Aircraft appear as the wrong type
Aircraft appear as the wrong type
Model matching is a best-effort system. If you see an A320 displayed as a 737:
- Your model set may not include the specific aircraft type or livery
- The other pilot may have filed an incorrect aircraft type code
- Update your model matching package to the latest version for better coverage
Flight Plan Issues
My flight plan disappeared
My flight plan disappeared
- Flight plans are tied to your callsign. If you change callsigns, you need to refile.
- Prefiled plans expire if you do not connect within a reasonable time.
- Some pilot clients require you to manually load your flight plan after connecting.
ATC says my flight plan is incorrect
ATC says my flight plan is incorrect
Common flight plan errors:
- Wrong aircraft type - Use ICAO type designators (A320, B77W, B789), not common names
- Invalid route - Ensure your route uses valid waypoints and airways. SimBrief validates this automatically.
- Missing equipment suffix - Include your navigation equipment code (e.g., /L for GPS/ILS)
- Wrong airport code - Use ICAO codes (CYYZ), not IATA codes (YYZ)
ATC Communication Issues
I don't understand an ATC instruction
I don't understand an ATC instruction
This is completely normal, especially for new pilots. Here is what to do:
- Say “Say again” - Ask ATC to repeat the instruction: “Say again, Air Canada 456”
- Ask for clarification - “Air Canada 456, can you clarify the taxi route?”
- Slow down - Take a breath before responding. There is no rush.
- Write it down - Keep a notepad handy for copying clearances and instructions
ATC is not responding to me
ATC is not responding to me
- Check frequency - Make sure you are on the correct frequency for the position you are calling
- Check TX - Verify your push-to-talk is working and the TX indicator lights up
- Wait - Controllers may be busy with other traffic. Wait 15-20 seconds and try again.
- Controller went offline - Check if the controller is still online in your pilot client. If not, switch to UNICOM 122.800.
- Text backup - If voice is not working, try sending a text message through your pilot client.
I accidentally connected on a runway
I accidentally connected on a runway
- Disconnect immediately from VATSIM
- Reposition your aircraft to a gate or parking spot in your simulator
- Reconnect to VATSIM
- Contact ATC normally
General Tips
My system clock is wrong and I can't connect
My system clock is wrong and I can't connect
VATSIM authentication requires an accurate system clock. If your computer clock is wrong by more than a few minutes, you may not be able to connect.Solution: Enable automatic time synchronization in your operating system settings.
High CPU/memory usage when connected to VATSIM
High CPU/memory usage when connected to VATSIM
- Reduce model matching render distance
- Lower the number of visible aircraft in your pilot client settings
- Close unnecessary background applications
- Model matching packages with fewer models use less memory
